Interstate and International licence holders

Map landscape

Interstate:

If you currently hold a learners license from another state in Australia e.g. NSW, VIC, QLD, etc, you are able to have driving lessons in the ACT and then attempt a one off Government Driving Assessment but cannot use the ACT Log Book method.  If you pass this assessment first time, you will receive an ACT provisional license (which has no special speed restrictions as in some other states).  If you do not pass, you must go through the process of obtaining an ACT learners license before attempting another Government Assessment or opting for the ACT Log Book method.

International:

If you have a Learners License from another country, it unfortunately will not be recognised in the ACT.

If you have a Full License from another country, you are able to have driving lessons in the ACT and then attempt a one off Government Driving Assessment but cannot use the ACT Log Book Method.  If you pass this Assessment first time, you will receive a full ACT License.

Before booking a Driving Assessment, you should check the Government requirements on the Access Canberra website - [ Overseas and Interstate Licence Information. ]

People with a current license from the following countries will be required to pass a knowledge assessment but will not be required to undertake a practical driving assessment.

Austria; Belgium; Canada; Denmark; Finland; France; Germany; Greece; Ireland; Italy; Japan; Luxembourg; Netherlands; New Zealand; Norway; Portugal; Spain; Sweden; Switzerland; United Kingdom and United States

This arrangement started in the ACT as of the 20th May 2002.

If you would like to use the log book method to get an ACT license you will first need to get an ACT Learners License. If you do this it would mean you can no longer use your overseas license to drive alone and you'd need to display "L" plates and have a fully licensed driver with you while driving.
